Bad news....I thought you guys knew, they REALLY did kill the funding. It was one of the things Bush cut from the budget wasnt it? Or did that item fail?
So just build a new school in Pound and have Kelly come over and it will boost the economy for Pound while Wise will still have UVA Wise and the shopping areas etc.
Call it a new name, Wise County West. And I think that would be perfect.

sharon mullins is the worst spanish teacher ever and totally screwed me over in high school by not teaching stuff i actually needed...she would always say that you will never need to learn how to do this or conjugate that...and in my spanish class in uva wise we are expected to learn everything she never taught...
[/ QUOTE ]
I took four years of Spanish with Sharon Mullins. And guess what? When I went to UVA Wise I never once had to crack the book in my Spanish class to study. I already knew it because I had a good teacher. You must not have put much effort into learning.

I have seen the results of consolidation by looking at some of the new schools like Letcher.
[/ QUOTE ]
Ah yes, the Letcher County hymns again. I made a point about this already:

"The large consolidated schools of eastern Kentucky are consistently among the lowest performing school districts in the state, while smaller independent school districts are among the highest scoring." Full Article
[/ QUOTE ]
So yeah, lets all "improve the education level" of Wise county by consolidating. Let's imitate Kentucky's school districts who arent perfroming so well.

and I see it at your beloved Pound High School. To say that you cannot see it would be lying.

I see nothing wrong with PHS other than mostly minor cosmetic things. All buildings require upkeep, and all buildings eventually have some problem or another. But there is nothing that cannot be repaired about it, and certianly nothing to merit not using the building.

Was it just cosmetic changes that got the 7th grade wing at Pound torn down? Or was it the crumbling structure, the wiring, the plumbing, etc.? (And no they didn't tear it down because they expanded JW Adams. They had the JW Adams expansion include accomodating the 7th grade students because the wing was becoming dangerous for occupancy. They tried for years and years to salvage that building but it couldn't be saved.)
Tell you what: you guys keep on convincing yourselves that this isn't going to happen. I would recommend a box of Kleenex though on stand-by when it does happen. I am done with this little discussion. It was a good thread, got alot of hits. Time is going to tell which of us is right.

Central Warriors. Respect the past, embrace the future
Just because aphrodite4evermore and I are "youngins" in your eyes does not mean that we do not have a perspective. Ill tell you this... Ive known a lot of stupid old people in my life. Wisdom does not always go along with age. Not to imply that all old people are stupid.. far from it. I just want to emphasize that being older does not always make you smarter or always mean that you have the right ideas.
[ QUOTE ]
I fully expect you to make a smart comment about falling into the traps, or not knowing what I'm talking about or something else, and then of course, a message or two later you'll say nobody has answered the questions. The problem is, you don't want to read the answers or immediately choose to say we're wrong or just wanting to consolidate.
[/ QUOTE ]
You could start to practice what you preach here. You are condeming everything that we say based on your opinion that chage is good and that consolidation must happen. Just because we disagree with you does not mean that we are always wrong. I daresay that if we got on here and posted in favor of consolidation, we would probably be commended by the lot of you for "seeing the inevitable future" or some other rubbish.
Don't get me wrong.. Im all for the improvement of education in general. I maintain however that the education in Wise County is a very good education, despite what some people enamoured with NOVA may think.
However, there has been NOTHING to prove that consolidation will improve Wise County's education one iota. All the banter about AP courses, dual enrollment, etc etc.. the point is, all these classes are already available (I've been in some of them myself) and if for some reason they are not, then what spudsmac said about sending a bus to UVA Wise and/or MECC for a half day makes perfect sense. If it has worked for the shop students for years, then why not for the college bound ones?
All these things that the pro-consolidation people have used for arguments just do not add up. Since all these things are already available, then why not keep the schools we have, run the buses, and settle the whole mess?

Where do you think they should build the new school?
Or are they supposed to house everyone in that [censored] box gym at JJK?
So where is the school going to be built??? I think thats a HUGE reason people are upset about these things. What tear down JJK and PV and build "new" schools,

And one more thing- 'fore the POUND gets to fired up, the first set of upgrades- included Pound and this is what the Board said they were going back to, so what is the group from Pound so upset about? Basham's "Close'em all but 3" plan is gone. The only folks left out in the cold were Appy and St Paul. Ill take up for Appy and St. Paul as well.. I care about them too, not just Pound. UNITY! heh

This is beyond unfair for the students that cannot afford the tuition of a college class while in high school.
AP Classes provided by the public school system in the schools are free.
AP Classes should not be reseverved for the financially privileged. AP Classes provided for free in high school help the underprivileged (yet intelligent) students compete for financial aid in college.

[/ QUOTE ]
A bus could get them there but tell me who's going to pay for that. If this is the grand solution you have an enormous hole in it. Who's going to pay the tuition? These classes should be free in the public school system.
You'll shoot your eye out.

Im still waiting for someone to tell me where these schools should be built. Down town wise? The INN?
